Commentary

[edit]

The 'Commentary' section starts with the following sentence: "In the 21st century, Linnæus's taxonomy of human "races" has been problematised and discussed". However, a number of references for that paragraph predate the 21st century. Therefore, "in the 21st century" should be changed to something like "in recent decades", for accuracy purposes.  Not done: The article is written in British English, which uses the spelling "formalise". ULPS (talk) 23:25, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Date of ennoblement acceptance

[edit]

In two places in the article, it says, as of writing, that he was ennobled in 1761. At the Uppsala University's Linnaean Gardens website, it says that the man's ennoblement/knighthood was officially accepted in 1762 (here). After googling, I also found a short biograghy in Svenskt biografiskt lexikon on the Swedish National Library's website, that was presumably originally published 1980-1981, that confirms the 1762 date (here). Which is the correct date? Torr3 (talk) 01:00, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

1762 is by the correct date. The king suggested his ennoblement in 1757, but it was not until 1762 that it was formally passed by the Council of the realm [1] (the king was at this point in time virtually powerless). According to Gunnar Broberg (Mannen som ordnade naturen), he started writing his name as "Linné" in 1760, and added "von" after 1762 (unclear date, SBL says 1763).
